Concussion Related Hearing and Balance Care in Greater Vancouver

If things have felt off since a concussion, even weeks or months later, a focused assessment can help make sense of what’s happening.

Concussions can affect more than memory or concentration. They can also disrupt how the brain processes sound, balance, and sensory input, which can show up as dizziness, tinnitus, sound sensitivity, listening fatigue, or trouble hearing clearly in busy places.

At Sonaris, we assess how a concussion may be affecting your hearing, balance, and sensory systems so you can better understand what’s going on and what support may help.

Greater Vancouver Concussion Treatment

When to consider a Vancouver concussion assessment:

You may benefit from a concussion-related hearing and balance assessment if you’re noticing:

  • persistent symptoms after a concussion
  • dizziness, vertigo, or imbalance
  • sound sensitivity or sensory overwhelm
  • ringing or buzzing in the ears
  • trouble understanding speech, especially in noise
  • listening fatigue or feeling drained by everyday environments
  • a sense that things still do not feel normal, even if tests or imaging looked fine

How concussion can affect hearing and balance:

A blow to the head, or rapid movement of the head and neck, can disrupt how the brain processes sound, movement, and sensory input.

For some people, symptoms settle within a few weeks. For others, changes can last much longer and show up in ways that are easy to overlook, especially when the problem is less about what you hear and more about how your system is handling it.

This can affect daily life in very real ways, from following conversation to tolerating noise to feeling steady in motion.

What to expect from your assessment:

We begin by listening carefully to what you’ve been experiencing.

Assessment may include:

  • hearing sensitivity and speech understanding
  • tinnitus and sound tolerance
  • balance and vestibular function, when appropriate
  • listening effort and sensory fatigue

The goal is to understand which systems are under strain and how that may be affecting your daily life.

Why this kind of assessment matters:

Post-concussion symptoms are often misunderstood because they do not always show up clearly on imaging, and they do not follow one neat pattern.

That does not make them minor. It just means they need a more careful kind of assessment.

By looking at hearing, balance, and sensory processing together, we can better understand what your system is doing and where support may help.

What happens after a concussion assessment:

Some people benefit from education, reassurance, and time to recover. Others may benefit from more targeted support, such as tinnitus care, balance therapy, listening strategies, or coordinated referrals.

We take things step by step, with clear explanations and room for follow-up as your system settles and your needs become clearer.

Referred to Sonaris Hearing Center Surrey by ENT Doctor Mori. An excellent experience with audiologist Fred Manta. With Fred’s expertise, selected hearing aids and some specialised equipment, I am able to hear much of what I lost over the years through industrial noise exposure. Anticipating multiple appointments, I was hesitant to make the drive as there were hearing centres much closer to home. It quickly became evident however that it would be worth every mile. Office manager Ravjir and office admin., Hanna were very thoughtful in finding appointments that were off peak traffic times and fitting me in when there was a snag. All in all my wife Linda and I appreciate Sonaris very much and we’ll happily drive the distance to continue with them as my ongoing hearing management requires. Thank you Fred, Ravjir and Hanna.

I simply cannot say enough about Fred Matta . He is clearly one of the most personable, professional and knowledgeable specialists that I have ever met in the medical field. He spent an exceptional amount of time assisting me to make the best decision regarding my hearing aids. He also allowed lots of trial time for me to demo two different models. There was never any pressure to make the final purchase. I would also like to thank his receptionist/assistant, Jas. She completes the picture that allows for a friendly, comfortable office visit.

Do not hesitate to contact Sonaris as you will be most impressed!!
