Indications for Referral
The following symptoms are linked with disorders of the hearing and/or balance mechanisms and warrant further investigation if present:
ADULTS & CHILDREN
- Reduced hearing sensitivity (acute or gradual)
- Difficulty hearing in group conversations
- Dizziness, vertigo or imbalance
- Ringing in one or both ears
- Frequently mishearing
- Difficulty following multi-step instructions
CHILDREN
- Speech delay
- Regressing speech development or poor articulation
- Poor attention
- Poor academic performance
OTHER INDICATORS FOR REFERRAL
- Concussion and head trauma associated with sport-related injuries, motor vehicle accidents and other traumatic brain injuries
- Work-related and recreational noise exposure
A patient presenting with any of the above symptoms and indicators should be thoroughly examined by a medical doctor to rule out underlying medical conditions that may warrant urgent medical care.
