Indications for Referral

The following symptoms are linked with disorders of the hearing and/or balance mechanisms and warrant further investigation if present:


ADULTS & CHILDREN

  • Reduced hearing sensitivity (acute or gradual)
  • Difficulty hearing in group conversations
  • Dizziness, vertigo or imbalance
  • Ringing in one or both ears
  • Frequently mishearing
  • Difficulty following multi-step instructions


CHILDREN

  • Speech delay
  • Regressing speech development or poor articulation
  • Poor attention
  • Poor academic performance


OTHER INDICATORS FOR REFERRAL

  • Concussion and head trauma associated with sport-related injuries, motor vehicle accidents and other traumatic brain injuries
  • Work-related and recreational noise exposure


A patient presenting with any of the above symptoms and indicators should be thoroughly examined by a medical doctor to rule out underlying medical conditions that may warrant urgent medical care.
